As someone who has just discovered the world of the 3DMM
community not too long ago, it is quite hard for me to review a
movie like this. I only have, what, two minutes to comment on.
And for me, I think it's a tiny bit too short. But let's rattle
through the good stuff first. The animations are superb. The
moving camera angles, the scenery, even the characters, who
actually blink, are great. Santiago has done a brilliant job
with animating this movie, no doubt about it. The music also
fits in with the movie, and Jaymond's voice is top-class, as
always.
OK, now let's go back to the start of my review: "It is quite
hard for me to review a movie like this. I only have, what, two
minutes to comment on." However, one good thing about its length
is that I can see this movie five times and only using up around
ten minutes of my time. I can spot things I originally missed
out. Small, subtle details are there, waiting to be seen. And
after a third time watching Abortion, the atmosphere was a lot
more chilling, which is what I presume the director was trying
to achieve. Two minutes though...hardly anything is explained in
this movie. And that is my major gripe. It does not fully
explain much at all. All you really get is, what effectively is,
a scenario, and the guy's resulting actions. That's all. Surely
the director could have gone into more depth?
Why did the woman choose to have an abortion? Why didn't she
tell the father beforehand? Why did she decide to tell him when
it's done instead? It's just not clear enough. If Santiago tied
up these small question marks, just adding perhaps another
minute or so, I could like this so much more. But perhaps I'm
being too harsh. Maybe the director wanted to leave these
questions unanswered. Since the movie comes from the father's
point of view, perhaps he doesn't refer to these questions
because he simply does not know the answers. I don't know what
to think really. Two minutes is just too short.
There is also one small detail which I have noticed first time
watching it. How the hell did she abort when she was, what, five
months pregnant? That's over twenty weeks! Well, I suppose
that's just a couple of frames, but it's those tiny things which
let the movie down in my perspective. Things not explained in
depth (a simple "I don't know why she did it" from the father
would suffice) and bits which seem rather confusing (like the
bump, explained in this paragraph).
And that is basically the whole movie. A couple of minutes with
great animations and some awesome sceneries, but with matters
which are left ambiguous. The ending, though, does make up some
of the bad points, even if it is over-the-top. You'll see what I
mean when you come round to watching this. Reading this review,
you might think that I didn't like Abortion much. In fact, it's
the opposite. I actually enjoyed this movie and I recommend you
to watch it at least once, but with an extended runtime, tying
up some loose ends, Santiago could have made a movie which would
have completely stunned me.
