The Sniper @ Andres De La Hoz HQ

Reviewed by James Quicksell

Andres De La Hoz. Love'im or hate'im, he's one of, if not the most prominent 3DMM reviewers and directors. Here we have an example of a nice unexpected, quirky movie from Andres that is full of community jokes and is rather enjoyable. I'll admit I had no idea what to expect when I downloaded this, especially surprised by the title but Andres does a good job at showing us his views on a lot of things in the community with a very humorous approach.

Now the movie starts off with a Christian gathering with what appears Melrose Let Down as the preacher. An appearance by Swishy also adds to the humor but I got a real kick out of the Jesus-mobile thing that Andres' character made that blew up the convention. Being a fan of community jokes I appreciated the way a lot of the humor seemed to formulate around Andres' opinions. As with the next scene the constant conflict between Andres and Adrian Pikios is shown and suddenly Andres is the target for an assassination after a small flashback showing The Showdown (in case you didn't know Andres didn't really like The Showdown which Adrian didn't take too well). The plot might seem kinda straightforward here and the ending predictable but at this point I really didn't care. I'm not even sure Andres really cared. I was ready to enjoy the rest of the movie, which didn't prove to be a problem.

The next venture was the 3DMM Music Contest, coming seemingly out of nowhere. The best bit by far was Domke's cameo which was hilarious, especially the angry German voice acting. The essence of everyone's opinion every time Domke posts his samples of the music he listens to is very well summed up in Andres' two lines. And even the joke making fun of himself, a homage to his long-ass debate posts, made me laugh. It's good to see someone that can make fun of themselves but not go overboard. And with the next scene showing his banning and arrival at back at his home country where "everything was just as it was when Andres left it with guerillas everywhere, mud on the corners, and poor people everywhere" were classics.
The last part of the movie, beginning with a humorous look at Jeff Ching and his love for crappy punk band, turned rather anticlimactic but it didn't bother me. The ending was pretty good though with Adrian and Maltby finally getting revenge for all of Andres' negative reviews on all their highly acclaimed movies, save for Rebirth of 3DMM.

So now after this little recap of the movie lets get down to the details. The animation wasn't too bad. Quirky and comical in some areas it worked well with the mood and did its job. The scenery was typical Andres. All cubes and such but it didn't take away from everything. It gave some of the scenery a primitive look though which seems a little less appealing at first but once you get into the overall action in the movie you don't seem to mind it as much. The one thing about Andres' use of cubes and stuff is that he seems to find new ways to use them every movie he does. Hell even stuff as stupid as the Jesus-mobile was kinda cool in itself because of the way it was made.

The voice acting in this movie was pretty average if not slightly below average. You could tell it was rushed though by the sounds of some of them, even if you didn't know Andres wanted the voices in a jiffy a few days before the movie was released. Ramza did a good job of doing Andres and Harris and Dustin did a good job of the preacher, Adrian, and Domke. Hell even for rushed voices they sounded better than the ones from Killing Ramza Brave. This is prolly the only downside to the movie, even though it didn't sound half bad you could tell it was rushed.

The story was ok, fairly linear but it was the humor that drove it right along to be very enjoyable. With the community jokes making up a majority of them I can see a lot of people liking this movie. This is one of more enjoyable shorts of the festival, if not the year. It's slick, entertaining, and overall just fun to watch. I'd definitely recommend this movie to everyone, especially community members to see how someone managed to express their opinions on a lot of issues in the community just through a simple movie and not some long, drawn out paragraph. Good job, Andres, this was a nice little surprise movie.
