The Operatives 2

Reviewed by Mike Belfance

If movies could get by on style alone, this would be an easy 100%. Actually, sometimes they can- but sadly, this one doesn't. I'm not saying it's bad- it's really freaking cool actually! It's just...way too short. So short in fact, that combined with the "BANG! It's over." ending, it almost feels like a joke movie. A really, really well animated joke movie. Yeah, I can tell I'm gonna have to struggle to make this review even the slightest bit coherent, so let's start this thing.

The storyline is simple, three "operatives" break into a building for no reason and blow it up. Yeah, it probably sounds like every P.A.M you've ever seen, but the way it's presented is so cool, you can almost forgive it. The movie is extremely well animated, and uses a unique style that makes it look like a comic book. The movies scenes are broken up into panels, which even include on-screen words to accompany the sound effects- kind of like the old live action "Batman" TV show, only about 100 times less cheesy.

This movie is really hard to review...had it been average length with a better ending and more actual action, it would be an all-time favorite of mine. This comic book style would have been AWESOME for action scenes, but as it is, the action is only about 10 seconds of the movie. So it ends up being a really cool way to show a few people just basically standing around. So 85% of the movie is them preparing for a cool fight scene (which is what you really want to see), 10% is that fight scene, and the last 5% is the stupid ending (although, it has a hilarious "moral" after it). However, 100% of it looked awesome, thanks to the comic-book style the movie has going for it. The problem is, the action scene (which, with this style, would have been great) plays out like a joke. It just barely starts and we get a "One fast paced action scene later" message and it's over. Had the director's focused more on the action itself, and less on preparing for the action, it would have been infinitely better.

Even the sound category is hard to really get into in a review. The gunshot sounds were good, I guess. The music fit pretty well, although the music for the fight scene was intentionally (at least I assume it was) chosen to not go at all with what was going on, further leading to the movie feeling more like an extremely stylish joke movie. The voice acting was okay, what little of it there was, but it was EXTREMELY hard to hear. The directors are definitely in need of a better mic.

Still, despite all of the problems I had with this movie, and all of the problems it gave me in trying to review it, I still find it strangely entertaining. The comic book style is just so freaking cool, I never get sick of it. If it were just two people staring at each other with awesome comic panel effects everywhere, I'd probably still enjoy watching it. While it can't really stand as a great movie itself, it does manage to get me a lot more hyped for Andres De La Hoz's "Satanik", which uses the same kind of style. My advice to the directors, don't rush the next one. Don't wait for the next film festival and then rush it out, work on it for as long as you need to, and set your own release date. With more time put into it, this movie could have been incredible. As it is, it has "rushed" written all over it, and literally written on it at the bottom of the credits. I can't really give it more than a 65% out of 100%, +5% because the message after the ending makes me laugh every time. Now don't rush and make the next one as awesome as it should be.
